In Smarter Than You Think, Clive Thompson takes a glass half full
approach to the rapid integration of technology into modern day life. While many individuals think of
technology as something that can harm social and communication development
among young people, Thompson see’s technology as something that can aid humans
in several ways. Examples include expanding
prodigious external memory, which allows humans to connect easier and faster,
and also encouraging superfluity of communicating and publishing. Another aspect of his book speaks to the
“Art of Finding” which deals with the simplicity of finding specific
information on a topic when you only know certain puzzle pieces of a subject. Interestingly
enough, he does talk in great detail about the use of technology in schools,
which has become very prevalent over the last few years. Thompson effectively
demonstrates all the different uses of technology and how it makes the world
more efficient and full of potential through his in-depth analysis of how the
virtual world and the real world intertwine.
